Nestled in the heart of the Cape Winelands, the Franschhoek Wine Tram offers an unforgettable experience for wine lovers and adventure seekers alike. Our Hop-On Hop-Off service is the perfect way to explore the lush vineyards, stunning landscapes, and world-class wineries of Franschhoek.

To make the most of your Wine Tram adventure, it’s crucial to understand how the Wine Tram works. In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the intricate details of the timetable, ensuring that your wine tasting experience is as seamless and enjoyable as possible!

The Basics of the Wine Tram Timetable

The Franschhoek Wine Tram Hop-On Hop-Off experience is designed to be flexible and convenient, allowing you to hop on and off as you please using the available half-hourly and hourly intervals, visiting various wine estates along the way. Before you set out on this incredible journey, here are the fundamental elements you need to know about the timetable:

1.Five Hop-On Hop-Off Routes (Lines)

The Wine Tram offers five distinct Hop-On Hop-Off routes (lines), each with its unique charm and selection of wine estates. These routes showcase the diversity of the region and its wineries, giving you the opportunity to craft a personalised wine tasting itinerary.

2.Bus First or Tram First

For each route (line), you have the choice of starting with the Bus first or the Tram first. Regardless of your choice, you will visit the same wine estates on the respective line, but the order of your visits will vary. This flexibility allows you to tailor your experience to your preferences. We do suggest that if travelling with younger children to start with the Tram First option.

3.One Hour Minimum At Each Wine Estate

With the Hop-On Hop-Off service, you have a minimum of one hour to spend at each wine estate. This gives you ample time to explore the estate, enjoy wine tastings, and soak in the beautiful surroundings.

4.Consider Your Timing

The timetable is meticulously designed to ensure that you have a smooth and enjoyable journey. However, there are a few critical factors to keep in mind:

  • If you decide to stay longer than one hour at an estate, it will impact the time available for other stops in your day.

  • We advise spending more than one hour at the larger estates, to allow enough time to experience all the estate’s offerings.

  • The earlier you depart, the more time you have, which means you can visit more wine estates in your day.

  • You can choose to skip certain wine estates if you prefer to spend more time at others.

5.Estate Tractors and Buses

Some wine estates connected by the railway will require a tractor or bus to transport you from the platform to the tasting facilities. These are the stops that read ‘Platform’ on the timetable, indicating the additional journey. This transfer will deduct from your available time, so it’s advisable to allocate at least two hours for such estates.

6.Plan Your Activities

Each wine estate has its unique offerings, from wine tastings to cellar tours and gourmet dining. Be sure to research the activities and experiences available at each estate by visiting the Wine Estates page  on our website. Keep in mind that some activities may require advance booking (these will be highlighted in red).

Understanding The Timetable

The Franschhoek Wine Tram timetable is your roadmap to a memorable wine adventure. Here’s how to interpret and make the most of it:

For Franschhoek and Groot Drakenstein Terminal Departures:

  • The “Stops” row at the top of the timetable indicates the number of stops you can visit based on your departure time. Departing earlier allows you to visit more stops.

  • The grey-highlighted row beneath the “Stops” indicates the available departure times. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes before your selected departure time to ensure you don’t miss your departure.

  • The first column indicates your starting and ending points.

  • The second column lists the terminals and wine estates the route will visit.

  • The third column specifies the mode of transport, either tram or tram-bus.

  • The times in the columns below the “Stops” row indicate collection and drop-off times. For example, if you depart at 9:30 am and skip Estate 1, you’ll be dropped off at Estate 2 at 9:48 am. If you spend two hours there, you’ll be collected at 11:48 am to move to Estate 3, arriving at Estate 3 at 12:00.

*A special note for Franschhoek-Based Routes

Please note that the timetables for the Franschhoek-based routes are interpreted slightly differently, with more frequent departures. For Bus First and Tram First options, the timetable provides options for both. It’s crucial to arrive 10 to 15 minutes before your selected departure time.

Last Drop-Off and Collection Times

It’s vital to note that the last drop-off times on the timetable represent the final opportunity to visit an estate. The collection times on the timetable represent the final opportunity to be collected from the wine estate. Once these respective times pass, you won’t be able to be dropped off or collected from the estate. After your final wine estate visit, the Tram or Tram-Bus will take you back to the terminal where you began your journey.

In conclusion, the Franschhoek Wine Tram timetable is the key to a fantastic wine adventure in this stunning region. By understanding how it works, you can plan your perfect day of wine tasting, taking in the picturesque surroundings and savouring the exquisite wines. We look forward to hosting you and helping you create unforgettable memories on this remarkable journey through South Africa’s wine paradise.
